At the last European Council meeting, not knowing what to do right now to get out of the psychological crisis caused by the no votes in France and the Netherlands, the EU’s leaders agreed to prolong the period of reflection. The fundamental reason they are lost, is however, as they are looking in the wrong place: Brussels.

Madeleine Bunting, a seasoned columnist at the UK Guardian, has recently pointed out in heart-felt terms that "Faith can make a vital contribution" to being human. Madeleine is referring here to traditional religious faith, but her statement is literally the truth whether one aspires to be a Roman Catholic priest or a molecular biologist. It really all comes down to what we have faith in, does it not? Realistically, however, our options are limited to the material world as the object of our concerns.

Nicosia has the dubious distinction of being the world's last divided capital, writes Stephen Gardner. The partition splitting Cyprus runs right through the historic centre of Nicosia. Near the Ledra Palace Hotel, now used by the United Nations as a billet for peacekeepers, all that separates the Turkish north and the Greek Cypriot south is a wire fence. Elsewhere the green zone is wider, encompassing streets and buildings falling into decay.
